Tights and Thigh Highs: keeping warm...kind of

The cold weather is always a bit uninspiring for me...clothing wise. I love the holidays, the rain and the snow but there are only so many ways I can combine over-the-knee socks with my overabundance of spring and summer dresses. Yikes.

Regardless of my lack of style inspiration I figured I'd showcase the few successful outfits that emerged from the cold season with a bundle of iphone WIWTs

Sorry for the bitchface in that last picture, It was on a day when I really didn't want to go to school.

Mermaid Hair

I've gone pink again! And hopefully for longer this time since I got it professionally done. If you're in the bay area/northern cali and you like her style, send me a message and I'll give you her digits so you can go pink too! er...or so you can just get a trendy haircut/color

anywho. I dont have much to say about my pink locks besides that I'm having a lot of fun matching, contrasting, and color coordinating it with outfits.

heres a peek...

I've found that the colors that suit me best have changed. While pastels used to be my best friend (seeing as I'm fair skinned and they kind of work with the soft color) instead, darker and more saturated colors work really well such as most jewel tones.

Oh and...lots of pink.

Threadflip (Buy My Clothes!)

So recently I've become a member of a new website called Threadflip, and I must say...I'm in love.
Basically, eBay, Etsy, and Crossroads Trading Co. had an illegitimate bastard child that turned out to be both adorable AND easy to care for...and they named her Threadflip.

This website is dedicated to selling lightly used, unworn or unwanted clothing. The beautiful catch, however, is that the shipping process (which is usually the reason I cop out of selling my clothes on eBay and end up getting royally ripped off by Crossroads) is made SUPER simple. Threadflip deals with the shipping rates in their entireity and simply sends the seller the pre-paid, pre-filled out  shipping label with directions as to which free box to pick up from the post office.

To put it simply, it's easy enough for my big lazy butt to feel like a real business woman.

So anyways, I feel a bit silly advertising for my store...however I figured the best target-audience would be people who often follow my blog and enjoy my sense of style

The clothes I'm selling aren't rejects, they;re merely ill-fitting on my body or just something I bought (and like) but never ended up wearing.

P.S. I send a free homemade gift (Alien Aftertaste themed hair accessory/piece of jewelry) with every purchase

http://www.threadflip.com/AlienAftertaste

Here are some things that are still up for sale as of today (September 12, 2012)

If you're interested in any of these items, go to http://www.threadflip.com/AlienAftertaste

Unicorns and Rainbows

Just taught myself how to make teeny tiny sleeves!
And I did it all while making this teeny tiny shirt that reminds me of unicorns and rainbows.
How old am I again?

Classics Of Love...And Style

So Last night I was invited to go to a concert in SF. If you've ever heard of the original ska-core band, Operation Ivy, then you've heard Jesse Michaels' sexy voice oi-ing all over the place. Well although the band split in '89, Jesse Michaels recently started fronting a new band, Classics of Love, and they really know how to make a bunch of wacky-haired pierced rebels of all ages jump around.

Here's one of my favorite songs of theirs...
click to listen! The show was at The Bottom of The Hill in San Francisco which is SUCH a cool venue. It was covered in monster mash/circus-esque decorations (which, as you might assume, is right up my alley)
I wish I could have gotten more pictures, but it was too dark and I already felt like the least hardcore kid at the show, and pulling out my white iphone definitely wouldn't help.

anywho, they were great, and I felt great in my white-stripes inspired outfit.

These red pants are my new best friend. (sorry for blurry pictures)

oh yeah...and i got this cool t-shirt for free

oi oi oi!

Finished Making My First Pair of Shorts!

So going along with the tropical resort vibes I've been feelin lately, I found an unfinished sewing project (tropical shorts) from my freshman year at UCSC and I was surprised to find how awesomely on trend I was two years ago! I was also surprised to see that I didn't finish the project despite having only a few stitches to go. My guess is that i must have broken a needle and didnt have a replacement or something along those lines...anyhow, I finished em and I couldn't be happier with the outcome.

Granted, there are a few odd stitches and amateur mistakes here and there, but for my first pair of shorts (made from scratch without any pattern or directions) I'd say I did a damn good job.

What do you think?

More Flea Market Finds!

After a long day at the flea market with my boyfriend, I found myself coming home with something different than usual...one small bag instead of two trash bags full.

...and I must admit, It feels good.

I wouldn't call myself a hoarder (that's what they all say) because I usually filter through clothes with the following process,

1.     Sell old, unwanted clothes to Crossroads Trading Co., eBay, or other buyers
2.    Donate whatever you can't sell to goodwilll or local free bins
3.    Buy more thrift store/ flea market finds, and/or clearance items from nicer stores.
4.    Then, when you get sick of those clothes, repeat steps 1-3.
Often times I empty out almost the entirety of my closet to sell and buy an entirely new wardrobe from sale sections and bargain bins.

However today was different. Instead of replacing my entire closet with a bunch of cheap crap I'll barely wear...I splurged a little (as much as you can splurge at a flea market) but I'm glad! Because I got better quality and more desirable items that will actually stay in my closet long enough to make themselves feel at home.

I got my inspiration from this one particular stand at the flea market that's a bit more expensive than most of the other stands, but it also has cleaner, more organized, and hand selected vintage items. My boyfriend swears buy the seller because he bought a leather greaser jacket from him a few years back and he's been offering him special deals on his items ever since. Sure enough, the seller recognized us as returning customers and offered us a cheaper deal...which I then bartered down to an even cheaper deal. What can I say? I'm tough.

Firstly I got this beautiful suede western jacket that reminds me of a mixture of Kissin' Kate Barlow (from Holes) and Jenny Lewis on her really country days.

$19
And the other find is this vintage Runaways T-shirt
how could I resist a shirt with athletic jersey sleeves and a picture of Joan Jett and Cherrie Currie on the front? So stoked.

$9
Anyways, the lesson for the day is that sometimes it's better to splurge on better quality items.
On that cheesy note, I'll leave you with this song by the Runaways...
